Brief History
History of Nepal Charter Basic School
Nepal Charter Basic School was established in 2067 B.S. Education is considered the guiding light of human life and the first step toward growth and development. People acquire education through formal, informal, and non-formal means. Formal education is obtained through schools and universities following a prescribed curriculum. However, the history of formal education in Nepal is relatively short. School education in Nepal began with the establishment of Durbar High School after Prime Minister Jung Bahadur Rana returned from his visit to Britain in 1910 B.S. Despite this beginning, educational development remained limited during the Rana regime. By 2007 B.S., Nepal had only two colleges and 310 primary schools in operation.
With the gradual urbanization of Kapan, the population of the area increased significantly. Following the restoration of multiparty democracy in 2046 B.S. and the adoption of liberal educational policies, both public and private schools began to expand throughout the country. In this context, local intellectuals, education enthusiasts, social leaders, and public representatives, including former VDC Chairperson and current Mayor of Budhanilkantha Municipality Mitharam Adhikari, along with Chandraman Shrestha, Thakur Prasad Khakurel, Shreekrishna Subedi, Shyam Adhikari, Ratna Upreti, and others, initiated efforts to establish a community school in the area.
At that time, a building originally intended for an elderly care home remained unused within the premises of the Manakamana Temple at Sapredhunga, Kapan-3 (currently Ward No. 10, Budhanilkantha Municipality), covering an area of approximately seven ropanis. Recognizing the opportunity to utilize this abandoned structure for educational purposes, community members organized a public meeting and resolved to establish a community school in the building. The proposed institution was named Nepal Charter Primary School, and a management committee was formed in 2067 B.S. to oversee its establishment and operation.
The school initially began with Grade 1. On 8 Bhadra 2068 B.S., it received official approval from the then District Education Office, Kathmandu, to operate Grade 1. The school gradually expanded its academic levels, receiving permission to operate Grade 2 in 2069, Grade 3 in 2070, Grade 4 in 2071, Grade 5 in 2072, and Grade 6 in 2073. During the academic years 2075, 2076, and 2077, classes from Nursery to Grade 7 were conducted. Due to financial constraints, declining student enrollment, and a shortage of teachers, the school temporarily reduced its operation to Nursery through Grade 5 from the academic year 2078. However, with continued improvement and support, Grade 7 was reintroduced in the academic year 2083.
The school has developed into an alternative educational institution that offers quality education and serves as a community-based option to private and English-medium schools. This achievement has been made possible through the support and cooperation of local social workers, intellectuals, education enthusiasts, the School Management Committee, the Parent-Teacher Association, teachers, staff, government and non-government organizations, donors, and parents.
On 18 Mangsir 2069 B.S., the school received its first government-approved primary-level teaching position. Another primary-level teaching position was added in Mangsir 2076. During the teacher allocation adjustment process carried out by Budhanilkantha Municipality in Ashadh 2079, the school received two additional relief teacher positions. At present, the school has four government-funded primary teacher positions, one Early Childhood Development facilitator, three privately funded teachers, and one school staff member, making a total of nine teaching and non-teaching personnel.
Currently, the school serves approximately 250 students from Nursery to Grade 7. A significant number of these students come from economically disadvantaged families, including children of laborers, domestic workers, and low-income households residing in different parts of the Kathmandu Valley.
To enhance the quality of education and prepare students for modern challenges, the school offers Computer Education, Additional English, and General Knowledge as supplementary subjects from Grades 1 to 7. Through these initiatives, Nepal Charter Basic School continues its commitment to providing accessible, quality, and inclusive education to children from diverse social and economic backgrounds.
